What is PFPS?

Patello femoral pain syndrome is challenging to overcome because of its complexity and lack of options to help remedy the cause of pain. It can be hard to track down what causes pain to flare up and most often is based on underlying pathology, experiences, and other biomechanical/ neurophysiological factors. Patello femoral pain syndrome is typically felt in, under, or around the knee cap. Sometimes pain can be felt on inside and out sides of the knee. Some causes of this can be due to foot abnormality, muscle laxity, muscle tightness, patellar subluxation and dislocation, training error, poor movement control, and biomechanics. Because of lack of consensus PFPS can be very hard to treat. Some simple and cost effective ways to treat initial pain is rest, ice, anti-inflammatory drugs, braces, Kt tape, proper footwear, and arch supports. Typically athletes or those who are very active feel the effects of patello femoral pain syndrome. This not a condition can can be treated by surgery since there is typically not tissue or musculoskeletal damage, but rather should be treated by religiously stretching hamstring, quadriceps, gluteus maximus, and iliotibial band in union with strength exercises.
